Trans Catalina Trail - Backpack

There is no other trail like it in the world

Service Description

This is the iconic sectional backpack of Southern California. There is no other trail like it in the world - a unique journey along windswept sand beaches, hidden alcoves, ocean views, buffalo, and endangered foxes. Catalina has long been the premier island retreat for Southern California but few people have ever explored it’s strange and unique vastness. We will camp along some of the most beautiful beaches and enjoy a truly epic journey that traverses the entire island. 5 days and 4 nights - 41 miles. This is an unforgettable bucket list adventure. DAY 1 We wake up early and head down to San Pedro for the first ferry across to Avalon on Catalina island. From the docks, we hike up Wrigley Terrace to the beginning of the trailhead. The first 5 miles includes a 1600 foot climb to the Divide Road with breathtaking views over Avalon and both directions. Our destination tonight is Blackjack campground - 10.5 miles from trailhead. It is the highest campground on the island. DAY 2 As we rise to a great hearty trail breakfast, the sounds of flocks of birds can be inspiring. Our journey takes us by gorgeous rolling green hills and a few lakes which often are great opportunities for up close encounters with the wild buffalo which were turned loose by old western film crews and now roam the island in wild herds. Lunch today is a true treat as we arrive at the Airport-in-the-sky - home of a world famous bison burger. Today we hike 8.5 miles total and arrive at Little Harbor - a true oasis of white sand and palm trees. Little Harbor was rated the “Best Campground in the West” by Sunset Magazine. It is one of the most breathtaking places you will ever camp. DAY 3 Today is our shortest day. It is a little over five miles to the sleepy town of Two Harbors. We can relax on our oceanfront beach campground and grab a drink or coke from the market as we relax before heading for the most pristine and isolated northern loop of Catalina Island. DAY 4 We get up early and set off on probably the toughest part of the trek with lots of elevation changes - 7 miles. The reward for all the hard work is stunning. Our destination is Parson’s Landing - a completely secluded beachfront oasis. This part of the island is wild and hardly traveled. We will be amazed by the star-filled skies as we swim and fall asleep to the sound of the waves. It is the perfect escape from the chaos of Los Angeles. TO BOOK - EMAIL - info@howtrek.com.
