Bridge to Nowhere

2 day, 1 night overnight adventure

Service Description

BRIDGE TO NOWHERE There is no better place to disappear to nowhere and escape crazy LA life then the Bridge to Nowhere. A quintessential Los Angeles experience - the Bridge to Nowhere is an iconic monument found nowhere else in the world. In 1936, as part of a public works frenzy, the beautiful art deco Bridge to Nowhere was constructed over the East Fork of the San Gabriel River. It was to serve as a major artery roadway from San Gabriel to Wrightwood - a key path in or out of Los Angeles. Unfortunately - or fortunately for us as hikers - a huge flood in 1938 wiped out the roadway leading to the bridge and changing the canyon forever. The project was abandoned due to lack of funding and the bridge literally stands by itself with no road for miles in the middle of nowhere. Today it has become a mecca for bungee jumpers and hikers. It is one of the most eerily unique sites you will ever see on a backpack. The Bridge to Nowhere hike is not solely defined or enjoyed for this unique awe inspiring monument at the end. It is a gorgeous 11 mile round trip hike with only 900 feet of elevation change that follows the refreshing San Gabriel River almost the entire way. We will cross the river many times - seeing wildlife, gold panners and epic valleys. Our adventure begins on Monday morning. We drive out to the San Gabriel trailhead. This is the perfect short escape from Los Angeles - close by but isolated and pristine. We will have a trail shakedown to make sure our gear is ready and packed properly. Howtreks loves instructing and teaching all the secrets to make backpacking a truly enjoyable experience. We will journey 5 miles on a rolling incline - following the river and enjoying the scenery. After 5 miles, we will reach our destination - the Bridge to Nowhere. We will enjoy a delicious gourmet trail dinner with sunset over the bridge and wine, coffee and hot chocolate. It is the perfect chance to reconnect with nature. On Tuesday, the return hike goes by quickly as we follow the river downhill. The Bridge to Nowhere creates an experience like no other - the ideal quick escape. Join us.
